New Panels for Abbey of St Edmund 1000 Murals

The team behind the Abbey 1000 celebrations which took place in 2022, unveiled new description panels for the Abbey 1000 murals on Tuesday 7 January.

The murals, at the rear of The Apex, were designed and created by Louise Gridley and depicted many varied scenes from the history of Bury St Edmunds.

They were installed in November 2022 and, as a committee, the team agreed these murals needed description panels to be mounted below them, and commissioned Louise to design them to complete the project.

Libby Ranzetta, Chair of the Abbey 1000 Group, said: “I am delighted that we can finally unveil these descriptions under the murals to complete the project.

“Unfortunately, the section of wall under the murals – in the exact spot we had wanted the panels to go – suffers ongoing wheelie bin wear, so it has taken a while to find an acceptable solution. In order for these to be protected and to avoid further damage to the walls, protective rails will also be installed. Particular thanks go to Martyn Taylor for advising on historical accuracy, Suzanne Drown for proofing the panel text, and Deborah Blumfield for liaising with the various contractors involved.”

A new video has now been produced to show the stages in construction of this important community art installation. Click here
